I named my dog Echo because he reflects my energy and presence.
I named my dog Echo because he reflects my energy and presence. There are no "bad dogs"—just reflections of how they've been treated. This simple truth ripples through every aspect of our lives and leadership.
Recently, pattern recognition revealed something profound in this mirror principle. My battle with chronic insomnia led me to explore neurodivergent cognition and adaptive stacking. What emerged wasn’t just another productivity hack, but a deeper understanding: what we perceive as fixed problems are actually reflections of dynamic systems.
This reflection principle appears across domains:
- Our physical symptoms reflect internal regulatory patterns
- Our cognitive challenges reflect neurological systems
- Our relationships reflect our presence (or absence)
- Our organisations reflect leadership patterns
Instead of seeing challenges to fix, we might see mirrors revealing our relationship with systems. The question shifts from "What's wrong?" to "What's being reflected?"
My exploration revealed three elements that create a dynamic system:
- Stimulating elements enhance alertness and structured thinking (e.g., cold exposure, focused movement)
- Expansive elements support creative flow and open thinking (e.g., divergent thinking, environmental shifts)
- Grounding elements stabilise processing and create transitions (e.g., somatic work, rhythmic breathing)
Together, these create not a fixed state but a living pattern, adapting to natural rhythms rather than fighting against them.
This pattern recognition extends to leadership. Leaders often seek fixed solutions to complexity when what they need is pattern recognition—the ability to see reflections, adapt to rhythms, and navigate changing landscapes with presence.
In my keynote talks and workshops, this shift consistently transforms how leaders approach complexity. Rather than wrestling with problems, they learn to read patterns, seeing organisations as dynamic reflections rather than static structures.
What patterns are you noticing in your reflections? What might your challenges be mirroring back about your presence?
This is what we explore in The Presence Lab—transforming leadership through pattern recognition, turning complexity from challenge to competitive advantage.
