The Pattern Recognition
Last week, I discovered something fascinating in my pattern recognition practice. It sparked a dialogue between ancient wisdom and modern transformation. I feel it’s too valuable not to share.
Above and Below
Consider the Nazca Lines of Peru. These giant geoglyphs, carved into the desert, teach modern leaders an important lesson. Some patterns can only be seen from above. However, they must also be experienced on the ground.
This isn’t just a metaphor. Nature teaches us that understanding needs different viewpoints. We find this in sacred sites with circles, mushroom networks beneath the ground, jaguar medicine in the Amazon, and the neural networks in our brains.
The Three Visions of Leadership
What if effective leadership, like our three-part brain, needs three kinds of vision?
Earth Vision: Operational Excellence
Ground-level engagement
Daily rhythms and practices
Team dynamics and execution
Sky Vision: Strategic Foresight
Pattern recognition from elevation
Future scenario planning
System-wide perspective
Heart Vision: Cultural Transformation
Values integration
Purpose alignment
Collective meaning-making
The Leadership Implications
This has profound implications for how we develop leaders. We often try to tackle problems at ground level. However, true transformation needs a blend of closeness and a broader view. It’s about finding the right balance between being present and gaining perspective.
Breakthrough leadership may not be about speeding up. Instead, it might involve gaining deeper insights, such as what high-performing teams need for activation and recovery. Similarly, innovation networks thrive on cycles of expansion and integration.
A New Measure of Success
What patterns might emerge if we measured leadership not just in metrics but in meanings? What if we viewed strategic reflection as essential, not a luxury, for handling complexity?
The Invitation
As you navigate your own leadership challenges this week, consider:
Where do you need Earth vision?
Where do you need Sky vision?
Where do you need Heart vision?
What patterns are inviting you to elevate your perspective?
